Violence Management
What do you do if you think a violent situation is about to occur?  How do you know if something is likely to turn violent.  How can you minimize the chances of such an occurrence in your life, and the lives of your family members?  This workshop answers these questions.  The class is mostly informational, the intent being to de-mystify violence and assault.  Understanding how violent crime occurs is the first step to preventing it. Unfortunately many of the images of violence that we have from popular culture are misleading and inaccurate.  This class works through presentation and discussion to illustrate the ways that potentially dangerous situations can develop, and looks at strategies for avoiding them or defusing them.  This workshop is geared towards older teens and adults.

Assault Prevention
This workshop focuses on skills of awareness, boundary setting, and escape. This workshop can be tailored to any age group, but in the case of young children involves both the child and an adult. The overwhelming majority of assaults can be prevented before they ever occur.  People that commit assault are generally looking for a particular type of target for their aggression.  Awareness and knowledge of the cues that assailants look for, and learning to avoid sending those messages can greatly reduce the chance of being singled out for attack.  Strong anecdotal evidence as well as research indicates that people with awareness and self-defense training are rarely selected as targets of violence.  Boundary setting is the skill of making a potential assailant aware that you know they are there, and you will not be an easy victim.  It involves both postural and verbal skills.  Assailants will generally investigate their targets to see if there is going to be resistance to the assault.  If it looks like there will be they will generally move on.  Escape is just that, escaping potentially dangerous situations by running away to a safe place.
Note:  This is not a self-defense class.  Self-defense generally involves physical technique designed to disable an assailant in a conflict.  This workshop does not involve any of those techniques.
