The
front
arm throw is a joint controlling technique against the wrist. [NOTE:
Since many books use Japanese terms to describe these techniques, we link
some of the English terms in this description to our Japanese Martial arts
glossary]. This is a technique we teach in several of our seminars and
workshops (see below) because it is an excellent
technique to escort combative people to the ground and control them without
having to use restraining devices or strikes. As such, it is a good technique
to use in hospitals, schools and clinics. It is also a good technique as
a lead-up to handcuffing a criminal suspect.
Let's assume the opponent attacks with a straight punch. Use a middle sweeping block on the offending limb and capture it with both hands (almost like clapping). Avoid grabbing for the arm, rather use a block. After capturing the limb, use your hand that is on top to push against their forearm using the web portion of your thumb and first finger (tigers mouth). Push through under their arm and pivot to face the same direction as your opponent (shown in picture). At this point you can make a forward cutting movement (like holding a sword) to throw the person or you can escort them to the ground. For further reading we have listed a few of the many books about these and other joint locking techniques.
