Photo of soto ude garami (~19 K)The outer arm wrap (Soto Ude Garami in Japanese) can be done off of a variety of attacks. It is a useful technique in that it can be used as a hold and lock, as a throw (to the front or back), or as an elbow break. As such it is a technique meeting a variety of tactical situations and we teach it in several of our workshops (see below).

If attacked with a straight punch, the defender (wearing black in the photo to the left) can use the left arm to perform a single knife hand block (shuto uke) against the inner aspect of the attacking arm followed by hooking the arm. The trapped arm is guided into the other hand. As the defender pivots to the outside and faces the same direction as the attacker, torque is applied to the trapped arm. This torque causes the attacker's palm to be facing upwards. The arm closest to the elbow (left arm in the photograph) wraps the elbow while the right hand continues to apply torque and pressure downwards. Extend the attacking arm and apply pressure to the elbow. From this position a number of options remain open.

Technique demonstrated by D.L Ballard and A. Hyman.
