Home Security Checklist #4:
Telephone
This is the fourth in a series of checklists related to home security (the
first was about home security while away on vacation,
the second about doors and windows, & the
third about lighting). These are suggestions
that might make your home less accessible to robbery. We recommend that
you seek the guidance of qualified professionals if you have any questions
or require a security evaluation of your home.

Do not reveal personal information
to strangers who phone you. This especially includes information about
when you will be away from home.

Impress upon children the importance of not revealing personal information
to callers.

Beware of people who contact you by telephone, seeking information about
you, your associates, your friends or your neighbors. Call back to verify
that you are talking to a person having a legitimate reason for requiring
such information.

A caller who hangs up without speaking may be attempting to determine whether
or not the house is occupied. Use such a call as a reminder to check your
security measures.

Keep emergency numbers available at all telephones. If you are easily excited,
have your address written out and available as well.

Never record precise information on an answering device about when you
will be away from home or when you anticipate returning.

Never cancel your telephone service when on vacation or an extended trip.

Report repeated nuisance or obscene telephone calls to the telephone company.

Do not talk to or debate with an obscene or nuisance caller.

Cellular phones have a number of built in protections. It is a good idea
to use these.
