Home Security Checklist #3:
Lighting at and away from Home
This is the third in a series of checklists related to home security (the
first was about home security while away on vacation
& the second about doors and windows.). These
are suggestions that might make your home less accessible to robbery. We
recommend that you seek the guidance of qualified professionals; especially
if you have any security-related questions or require a security evaluation
of your home.

Provide sufficient lighting at all doors, windows, and other openings in
the walls of your house to deny the cover of darkness to an intruder. Lighting
is generally sufficient when you can read a wrist watch by it at night.

Light the front of your property and encourage your neighbors to do the
same with theirs.

Report non-working streetlights immediately.

Illuminate all shadowed areas caused by trees, shrubbery or construction
features or your house. Pay particular attention to any doors or windows
that cannot normally be seen from the street or from neighboring homes.

If an alley serves your home, illuminate the entire area between the alley
and your house.

Provide additional illumination for areas where trash containers are located,
especially if they are adjacent to an alley.

Light all gates in fences surrounding your property.

Use lights when you move from room to room at night.

Leave some lights burning at night.

Draw your drapes at night.

Use timers to turn lights on and off during brief absences, trips, or vacations.
Motion-sensitive lights and lights that turn on at dusk (off at dawn) are
also good ideas.

If you believe someone is in your house when you return, go to a neighbor
and call the police.

Prepare emergency lights in the event of an interruption in utility power.
These can include flashlights, kerosene lanterns, and candles.

Park only in well lighted places.

Carry a flashlight in your vehicle in case your vehicle breaks down. A
heavy flashlight can also be used for self defense purposes.
