Jonathan Weir fought in the
Revolutionary War
Battle of Kings Mountain
President George Herbert Walker Bush &
President George W.
Bush
are Descendants of Jonathan Weir
Jonathan was born between 1750 and 1760, probably in Rockbridge Co., Virginia. His will was dated September 4, 1832, in Blount Co., Tenn. Shortly after his father’s death, Jonathan and several of his brothers and sisters moved to Washington Co., Virginia. In 1780w Jonathan served in the “Battle of King’s Mountain” under Captain David Beatie. He is included on a pay list submitted by Captain Beatie and this document is in the Virginia State Archives. Jonathan received two 400 acre tracts in 1781 and 1782 and is found in the Virginia Tax Payers, 1782-1787. Sometime during the 1780’s Jonathan married Mary (Polly) Pettus. The young couple moved to Blount Co., Tenn., probably in the late 1780’s along with most of his brothers. There are many records in the courthouse in Maryville, Blount Co., Tenn. on the Weir and related families. Jonathan’s name is on the tax rolls of Blount Co. in 1800. His name is enumerated in the census of 1830. Shortly after the death of her husband, Polly Weir, who was a very old lady, went with her daughter Mary and son-in-law John Moore Rankin to Missouri, where she lived with her son Rev. Samuel Weir in Greenfield, Missouri (Dade Co.). She was a charter member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dade Co., and is listed as Polly Weir Sr. to distinguish her from Rev. Samuel Weir’s wife, who was Polly Weir Jr. She is buried in the Weir Cemetery, 1 and 1/2 miles NE of Greenfield, Mo. “Mary Weir 1758-1843”. Buried next to her is John Moore Rankin and a few lots away Rev. Samuel Weir and his wife are buried. Many of Jonathan’s and Mary’s descendants were ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church

This is Mary Weir's grave (I think). Second stone from the right.
Badly worn
She was the widow of Jonathan Weir, Sr. She died in Dade Co., Mo.,
in 1843.
This is Darlene Swanson in the Weir Cemetery, Dade Co., Missouri
(near Greenfield).
Oct. 19, 2000
Jonathan Weir & Mary (Polly) Pettus were Darlene Swanson's GGGG grandparents on her dad's side. One of Jonathan and Mary's son, James Hutchenson Weir is Darlene's GGG grandfather, through Darlene's Dad's mother, and her mother. His son John Rankin Weir is Darlene's GG grandfather. William Gault Weir, who was James' son and John Rankin Weir's brother, is Pres. George H. W. Bush's great grandfather. The Weir Cemetery located in Dade County Missouri and where Mary (Polly) (Pettus) Weir grave is located. The stone is worn very smooth, so is difficult to make it out, even with paper and pencil tracing. Jonathan is buried in Tennessee, died in 1832. Mary (Polly) then went to Missouri to live with her son Rev. Samuel Weir, and died in 1843. Darlene's GGG grandfather, James Hutchenson Weir is buried in Cooper Co. Missouri (about 70 or 80 miles from me) so one day I hope to get there, too. The Weir Cemetery in Dade Co. is so beautiful and peaceful and well-kept. It is about 1/2 mi. off the main road through a cow pasture and on top of a hill. Large old trees shade the graves.
