My TALIAFERRO/TOLIVER Ancestry

Guillaume I, 3rd Count of Angouleme (reigned 916-975) was the first known to have the name Taillefer.
In a battle he cleaved the body and armor of Stonius, a Norman chief, from head to foot.
The name means Cleaver of Iron. From the French tailler- to cut; and ferro- iron.

A knight named Taillefer came to England with William. He struck the first blow of the battle of Hastings, singing the Song of Roland, and was killed there.

Aymer de Taillefer, the 14th Count of Angouleme was father of Isabelle Taillefer, wife of King John of England.

The name was later Anglicanized to Taliaferro.
